Lordships: The Era of Techno-Feudalism

We open a space for conversation with Proyecto UNA to think together about what is happening in and with hegemonic social networks. We ask ourselves how our gaze is shaped, who decides what we see and in what way, and why hate speech becomes viral. We will also reflect on what remains of our autonomy in an ecosystem governed by algorithms that operate technofeudal logics and by opaque and non-negotiable terms and conditions of use. This session aims to address, from a critical perspective, the neoliberal technocapitalism that underpins proprietary platforms: algorithmic manipulation, automated censorship, and digital policies that shape visibility, behaviour, and online relations.

We will also reflect on technofeudalism, a system in which large platforms act as “digital lordships”, confronting infrastructures and capturing data, time, and interactions in order to turn them into rents and positions of power. We will analyse how this monopoly of access affects our capacity for action and what strategies we might imagine to regain sovereignty.

It will be an open and accessible conversation for all people with concerns about digital environments: both for those who wish to understand how algorithms work and for those seeking tools to act, imagine, or build other possible forms of network.

Talk with Proyecto UNA and subsequent discussion facilitated by Xeito Fole and Rodri Yrigoyen of the Digital Guild.  We propose a session to critically think about the neoliberal technocapitalism embedded in proprietary social networks, the virality of far-right discourses, manipulation and censorship through algorithms, terms and conditions of use, and digital policies.
